We have been installing and repairing slate roofs for 98 years. The two pictures you see are projects we did 30 and 40 years ago. Brick market we did in the 90’s using an unfading green slate, brass nails with a lead coated copper sheet metal and gutter linings. On the left is a picture of a dormer of the Seamans Church Institute. We installed all new flashing at each of the dormers on the North side using lead coated copper flashing, as well as gutter linings and coping cap covers.
There are right ways and wrong ways to install a slate roof. I would be happy to explain the difference. There was a time, every slate roof was installed perfectly. It is an art form. You can tell, once you have the eye, just by looking at it. My grandfather used to say, “you should be able to dance on a slate roof.” Of course he was talking about Fred Astaire.
If you pick the wrong person to fix your roof, it may take months or years to find out. The wrong person on your roof causes damage while accessing your roof by causing cracks or fractures, and it takes a while for that fractured slate to fall or leak.
We have one of the largest slate collections in Southern New England for the last 80 years. We used to sell our slates to the public, but that stopped about 15 years ago.
The first thing you should know about slate is that it does not last forever, but there are slates that last longer than others. Some roofs are worth fixing, while others are nearing the end of their natural life. I will explain everything you need to know about your slate roof. All slate roofs tell a story, and I would be happy to tell you the story of your roof. Request a Quote from Newport Construction Services for Slate Roof Installation and Repair.
