Metal work has been a core part of Newport Construction Services since the very beginning.

For nearly a century, we have been designing, fabricating, and installing custom metal systems for residential and historic properties throughout Rhode Island.

This includes everything from early skylight fabrication to complex copper roofing systems.

A Legacy of Custom Fabrication

Before modern skylight manufacturers existed, skylights were built by hand in metal shops.

Many of the older 2’ x 3’ skylights found on homes built over the last 100+ years were fabricated by companies like ours.

  • Early skylights were constructed using metal frames and wire glass
  • Larger custom skylights were fabricated entirely in-house
  • Some of these original installations lasted over 90 years

We have recently replaced skylights at our own shop that were nearly a century old—demonstrating the longevity of properly executed metal work.

Copper Roofing Systems

In the 1980s and 1990s, we fabricated and installed a large number of copper standing seam roofs across Rhode Island.

Notable projects include:

  • Providence Train Station Restoration
    • Full copper standing seam roof installation
  • Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum Addition
    • Sealant-filled, flat-locked, barrel-vaulted copper roof

These types of projects require:

  • Precision fabrication
  • Skilled installation
  • Deep understanding of metal movement and weathering

Copper Gutters and Flashing

Over the years, we have installed:

  • Miles of copper gutter linings
  • Custom copper flashing systems
  • Integrated metal details for roofing systems

Today, we continue to fabricate and install:

  • Copper flashing for slate roofs
  • Flashing for wood shingle systems
  • Flashing for asphalt roofing
  • Custom gutter solutions

Why Metal Work Requires Specialized Skill

Metal is one of the most durable materials used in construction—but only when handled correctly.

Proper metal work requires:

  • Understanding expansion and contraction
  • Correct fastening methods
  • Proper integration with roofing systems
  • Precision fabrication

Poorly executed metal work can fail quickly.
Properly executed metal work can last generations.

Built for Rhode Island’s Coastal Environment

Metal systems in Newport County must withstand:

  • Salt air exposure
  • Moisture and humidity
  • Temperature fluctuations
  • Wind and weather extremes

Copper and other high-quality metals perform exceptionally well when properly designed and installed.

Final Thought

Metal work is not just a trade—it’s a craft.

From historic skylights to modern copper roofing systems, we bring the experience and attention to detail required to produce work that lasts for decades.
